IMTUF 100: Countdown

IMTUF: T-minus 2 days. The 100 mile rig is fully equipped!  If you're not here on Friday, you're missing a good one.  Even I forget how good it is until I link huge chunks of it.  83 miles of running, marking and log trundling over the past 4 days.

Pushing through tons of game in every drainage.  September nears and the hills are coming alive.  Elk, wolves, deer, grouse....

and SWAMP DONKEYS!  Feast your eyes on this graceful beast.

After IMTUF, it's into the woods with the bow, followed by some pacing duty at Wasatch, then maybe a jump over to a little race in Colorado.  "It's duck season...no it's RABBIT season."

First Half of August 2013

A day on Nick Peak with B
Nick Peak stands at 9100' and demands 4000' of climbing with 3000' of that off trail.  With a "no falls" chimney to cap it off, the peak is one of the best I have climbed in Idaho.  We raced a powerful storm approaching from the south.  B is in serious IMTUF100 training.
She's ready.

Finally out of the 3000' vertical bushwhack.

Final granite spire.

Just below the left/north side of the "Nick" in the top.  It is the right side of the Nick that is the summit.
Summit scramble.
Lightning crashes, but the withered tree survives.

Fitsum drainage.

I see the Nick!

Running with friends...

Matt, Katie, B and I above Box Lake on smoky day.  Fires in Boise have been sending smoke 100+ miles north to us.  meanwhile the Payette National Forest stands basically fire-less.

18 year old McCall Keller on Fall Creek trail.  This kid can run- 4:24 mile, 1:59 800.  We have been running together the past 3 summers.  Great guy and an great friend.

McCall on the Crestline Trail.  His previous long run was 13.  We knocked out almost 19 miles with 5000' gain on this day.

McCall is 6'7".  Box peak is barely visible behind him.  Crestline Trail.

Another meadow below Box Peak.

McCall Climbs out from the Box Lake Cirque.

Climbing to Fall Creek Saddle.  Payette Lake and McCall below.

Fall Creek Summit.  Snowslide and Sawtooth peaks in the background.

Fall Creek descent is steep.  Here, B latches onto a small pine to keep from sliding out of control.

Storm Peak.  I ran from 20 Mile Trailhead to the 20 Mile Lakes in 1:01.  Previous PR was 1:11.  From the Lakes, it is a short but steep (.75 miles, 1400+ feet) off trail hike to Storm Peak.  The view is of South Loon Peak and the rugged Loon Creek drainage.  A huge granite wall looms in the foreground.  Looks like great climbing.

View from foreground to background.  20 Mile Lakes, 20 Mile Creek canyon, Crestline Trail peaks.
